What we do, How we do it?

Gallery One model comp Spads

The club is mainly a sport flying club, with some members who do compete in competition. We fly radio control models built from a variety of materials from the traditional balsa, spruce and ply mix to modern foam, fibreglass and carbon fibre mixtures. The typical Sunday may see models that are as varied as they come. From gliders, sports, scale, fast, slow, helicopters, unorthodox models, the list is probably as varied as you can think of, we have even had a number of gas turbine models.
The models are controlled from the ground using radio control equipment with a multi function transmitter held by the pilot and a receiver and servo's mounted in the model. This equipment gives us multi functional control over the model aircraft just like a full size aircraft. The transmitter and receiver are both powered by batteries, normally re-chargeable.
The models can be powered by a variety of means either by winching them up for gliders, electric power (ever more common) or powered by internal combustion engine. These generally fall into 3 categories

1. A Glow engine runs on a mixture of Methanol and Castor Oil,

2. Diesel, on a parrafin type mixture or

3. Petrol runs on a 2 stroke petrol/ oil mixture.

Our models can come from a variety of sources, either pre-built (and covered & painted), built from a kit, built from a plan, or designed and built from scratch.
